Creating a Mozilla-Search icon
Mozilla-Search icons are 16x16 pixels, there are no exceptions to this rule. Your icon must have one of the following extensions:
.gif
.jpg
.jpeg
.png
Although this is unsupported, Mozilla-Search will accept other types of images that the Mozilla browser is capable of displaying. However, your icon will have to end in a supported extension. Whatever extension you choose, the file name must match the file name of your .src file exactly.
Top^How Mozilla-Search uses search icons
Mozilla-Search gathers the name of your .src file and looks for an icon of the same name with the following extensions.
.gif
.jpg
.jpeg
.png
Mozilla searches for the icon in that exact order. Once it finds a match it is done. If you or a user has previously installed a plugin with the same name and the icon does not appear to update when you install the new plugin, most likely the new image is further down the list from the original. For this reason when I create icons I choose .png as it is the last one on the list. If a site owner would like to maintain or update their Mozilla-Search plugin and icon, then they do not feel cornered into using a specific file type because whatever image the site owner chooses will always replace the icon from my plugin on the users display.

Luckily, PNG does support transparency, so you'll be able to create searchbar icons in PNG format with transparent areas. :-)

You should be able to use transparency with index-color PNG -- that should save a lot of space. If you are editing in the Gimp or in Photoshop, change to Index-Color mode.

If you try to use a different name for icon then src, FireFox will create 2 entries for one plugin - one for icon and one for the search. Then if you'll try to select installed icon and run some query, FireFox will crash.

How do I get my search plugins verify by the MyCroft mozdev team?
I've contributed several search plugins and could help in the verification department if needed. Just let me know what you need.

It would be wonderful if Firefox included a system to re-order, remove, rename, and change icons for search engines. Having to hack around with configuration files is not the height of user-friendliness, and prevents less experienced computer users from doing this at all.
Minor thing: the Wiktionary icon should not be the same as the Wikipedia icon.

there is an extension: http://maltekraus.de/Firefox/Search-Engine-Ordering/#install
or you can use the about:config entries browser.search.order.{digit} - the value of each entry should be the name of the search plugin, {digit} it's position (starting from 1)
